“I look up and the world emerges before my eyes and fills my heart.” — Wings of Desire (1987)
Again, another Substack post inspired by a friend, it goes something like this:
Friend (F): Wow, the sky is so blue today.
Me (M): I think the sky is blue on most days.
F: Really? I only remember when the sky is gray, it makes me sad.
M: Oh.
F: I only look up when the sky is pink.
(Sorry to my friend, whose words I have butchered.)
There has always been something reassuring about looking at the sky. It is always there. Lots of people see the same sky and I often wonder if there’s anyone looking at the sky at the same time as I am.
It reminds me that I am only so little. We are so small in the grand scheme of things. It’s very reassuring to be insignificant — we are but a minuscule piece of the world and our actions and worries and stresses are so small compared to the vastness of the universe. The world, it emerges before my eyes, and it fills my heart.
While there is a sense of powerlessness that comes with this thought there is also a sense of empowerment, to be brave and to take risks. After all, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter…
Look up.
